Overlord Pedagogic |
Max Hastings has for many years, researched about Operation Overlord and the Allied Assault in France during June 1944 in the World War II.
In his book "Overlord", he gives the reader a resume about the situations and all the parts around the Operation.

A thing I noticed when I read this book, was that you have to be interested and well-read in WWII history to have a purpose and to get something out of reading this book. This is absolutely not a book for a regular person who wants a couple of hours of fiction literature. It is a military historical work with information, strategies, quotes, maps and small biographies. It is filled with continuing chronological time jumps and reflections from both the author Max Hastings and a person who fought for the Operation.
One great thing with this book are the quotes and reflections from both Allied and Axis soldiers. You can get a big overview of the situation back then in 1944 from both sides point of view. All the pictures, maps and squares with information about arsenal are fantastic.
This makes the book quite versatile and more realistic. I can see the strategic pattern of Overlord and the following operations, and read about the important weapons and armour the armies used.
One thing I dislike a little bit is the large jumps between the beginning , the middle and the end of the operation. Sometimes I wonder which date it is in the book and it feels like some background information and clues are missing. I would like to get even more information out of this book, even though the quotes and scenarios are well done. Most of the chapters are like each other and I am a little bit disappointed with the structure and the very thin red line this book has. However, I really like this book. I have read many others ones with this style but Hastings book is special and entertaining in some way.
The book has 370 pages packed of information, comments, strategies, scenarios and war stories is probably the best way to describe this book.
The point of views from both the Axis and Allies sides are invaluable, so as the information of the arsenal and all the quotes from the soldiers of the operation. Most of the book is top-notch interesting and thrilling to the edge, but the thing that makes the book a less attractive is the big amount of jumps in time and events – which disturbs the overview and the history.
Otherwise, I really recommend this book for the military historical interested, but not for usual readers. Hastings is a good writer and has obviously paid a lot of time with this book.
